About Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure used to remove fat deposits from various areas of the body due to hereditary and or significant changes in body weight such as weight gain or loss and pregnancy resulting in a sleeker body. Liposuction can be used to remove fat pockets from almost any area of the body where there may be excess fat, such as the neck, arms, chest, abdomen, love handles, hips, thighs, and knees. Liposuction is for those people who have taken action to improve their figure on their own and still have fat deposits that are bothersome and cause distress.

Liposuction may be performed in an office setting, in an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Generally, liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis for reasons of cost and convenience. The patient can expect to resume normal activities within one to two weeks postoperatively. The amount of time your liposuction procedure takes will vary depending on the size of the area and the amount of fat to be removed, but generally lasts between one to three hours.

On the day of the operation, the plastic surgeon in Westchester, NY will mark the areas to be liposuctioned prior to entering the operating room. Most small and moderate sized liposuction procedures can be performed under local anesthesia where the patient is awake for the procedure but the area is numbed, resulting in minimal, if any, discomfort. Once the patient is comfortable, several very small incisions are strategically placed in hidden regions of your body. The numbing fluid, called tumescent fluid, is gently inserted into your fatty tissue with a small cannula or tube. This also helps to reduce bleeding and bruising from the procedure. Next, a slightly larger cannula or small tube is inserted through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out. The suction action is provided by a vacuum pump. Liposuction can be performed as a power assisted, ultrasonic, or laser procedure to further aid in removal of fat and tightening of skin.

In order to promote contouring of the sculpted areas, patients are asked to wear a compressive garment continuously during the first one to two weeks and then at night for the subsequent two weeks which will help to reduce swelling. It is important to note that you will not see the full results immediately. Improvement will become apparent after several months when most of the swelling has subsided. At this time, you will look and feel better than ever.
